Kyla
R&B Princess Kyla is one of the most accomplished performers of her generation. Born Melanie Hernandez Calumpad on January 5, 1981, Kyla is known for the versatile, soulful quality of her voice, which enables her to belt out tunes from classic Ella Fitzgerald to modern Alicia Keys.
Kyla’s first exposure in singing competitions was in the TV competition Tanghalan ng Kampeon. However, her first victory was in Hamon sa Kampeon, a contest sponsored by radio station DZRH. After that, she competed again in Tanghalan ng Kampeon in 1993 and became a champion for seven weeks. Kyla also joined other competitions, the Yamaha Music Quest and Metropop Young Singers.
The young singer also became one of the talents of That’s Entertainment.
While establishing her singing career, Kyla also pursued her education and graduated with a Mass Communications degree at the Philippine Christian University.
The smooth quality of Kyla’s voice eventually got the wider recognition it deserved with the success of her breakthrough single, Hanggang Ngayon. She bagged the Best New Artist of the Year and Video of the Year trophies at the 2001 MTV Pilipinas Awards. The single earned her more awards locally and internationally.
Kyla produced more albums including I Will Be There and Not Your Ordinary Girl. At this point, there is no denying her right to be hailed as the country’s R&B Princess. Aside from being a multi-awarded singer, Kyla also became the host of Popstar Kids in QTV. She also became one of the artists that regularly perform on the Sunday variety show SOP. Together with another R&B singer Jay-R, Kyla continued to move audiences with her soulful but modern renditions of classic and contemporary R&B tracks. She became in-demand for collaborations with foreign artists, and she recorded tracks with stars such as Keith Martin, Fra Lippo Lippi, Ronan Keating and the boy band Blue.
Kyla is enjoying success in her love life too. She is currently the girlfriend of Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles star and PBA player Rich Alvarez.
