Mandaluyong City General Info

In the late 70s and early 80s, no one would have thought that the City of Mandaluyong would be as prosperous and prominent as it is today. Its rapid development has established it as one of the country’s most progressive areas. From a quiet residential suburb, Mandaluyong City has become home to offices and majority of the metro’s shopping malls, earning the nickname “The Tiger City of the Philippines.”

History of Mandaluyong

During the Spanish rule, Mandaluyong was formerly known as one the barrios of Sta. Ana de Sapa, which under the jurisdiction of District of Paco, Province of Tondo. In 1841, Mandaluyong was separated from Sta. Ana de Sapa, and was named San Felipe Neri in honor of Rome’s patron saint. When the Americans came, San Felipe Neri was combined with the municipality of San Juan del Monte. San Felipe Neri even became the capital of Rizal province in 1904 for several months. It was in 1907 that San Felipe Neri was declared an independent municipality and separated from San Juan. The area was renamed the Municipality of Mandaluyong under House Bill No. 3836, and became a city in 1994.
