Sharon Cuneta
Megastar Sharon Cuneta is one of the celebrities in the country who truly embodies the title movie star. Born on January 6, 1966, she is the daughter of Pablo Cuneta, who was mayor of Pasay City for several decades. Coming from a rich political family, Sharon certainly does not need showbiz in order to live splendidly, but her talent and looks made showbiz knock on her door.
She started her singing career through her single “Mr. DJ,” which became a monster hit in 1978. Needless to say, her debut album DJ’s Pet, was a success. In 1981, she starred in her first movie, Dear Heart, which paired her with heartthrob Gabby Concepcion. She was 15 years old. This was followed by P.S I Love You. This started her very famous loveteam with Gabby. Her “rags to riches” roles and her ability to appeal both the elite and masa moviegoers contributed more to her skyrocketing popularity. Her onscreen chemistry with Gabby led to a real-life relationship, and they were married in both civil and church ceremonies when they were just 19 years old. Sharon was already pregnant at that time to daughter KC Concepcion. Their marriage did not last however, and they filed for annulment a few years after.
After her marriage, Sharon focused on her career, making movies left and right and hosting TV shows. She starred in some of Philippine cinema’s classic films, such as Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig and the immensely popular Bituing Walang Ningning, with also stars Cherie Gil. It spawned the ever-popular line, “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying-hard copycat!”
She was given her own musical variety show, The Sharon Cuneta Show, which ran from 1986 to 1997. In August 1998, she was given another show, Sharon, which lasted until May 2004. The show was again resurrected in February 2006.
Sharon earned the title “megastar” because of her countless awards in TV, music and movies. In 1996, she got a Grand Slam for winning the Best Actress trophy from all the award-giving bodies (Urian, People’s Choice Award and FAMAS) for her role in Madrasta.
The megastar is also known for her countless product endorsements. She is known to be the best-selling celebrity when it comes to commercials. Sharon has endorsed practically everything, from instant noodles to banks.
She is now happily married to Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan,” and they have two daughters, Frankie and Miel. KC, who is now a star herself, has been legally adopted by the senator.
