How the band was formed

The members formed the band when they were Fine Arts majors at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. Their first gigs were at the UP Fair and other major campus events. The band’s first name was Kamikazee Cornflakes, which they eventually shortended to Kamikazee. Kamikazee gained notoriety in the campus for their rendition of different kinds of songs, from Yano’s “Tsinelas” to Britney Spears’ “Lucky.” The band is also known for their shocking expletives and suggestive movements during performances.

In 2002, Kamikazee released their first album. Three years later, they released the single “Chicksilog” for Rok On!, the soundtrack for the online game Ragnarok. Kamikazee came out with their second album, Maharot, in 2006. The album’s carrier single, “Narda,” became one of the massive hits during the year.

Kamikazee is also known for their close friendship with Parokya ni Edgar, one of the country’s most established and popular bands. The musical style of the two bands is similar. They are known for their wacky songs and funny videos. One member of Kamikazee will jam with a Parokya performance, and vice versa. Vocalist Jay Contreras gave a hand in creating several Parokya hits, including “Chikinini,” “Okatokat” and “The Yes Yes Show” and “The Order Taker.”

The band is also included in one of the most popular albums of 2006, Kami nAPO Muna, a compilation of the remakes of the classic songs of the Apo Hiking Society. Kamikazee did a lively, funny version of “Doo Bidoo,” which became one of the album’s biggest hits.

Kamikazee is currently working on a new album called Long Time Noisy.
