Here are my recommendations:

1. Se-Bay Resort in San Juan, La Union- Though the accommodations are far from 5-star, surfing is so much fun, you'll find no reason to go back to your rooms unless it's to retire for the night. It's great for a barkada getaway...and didn't I just say surfing is soooo much fun?

2. Any of the resorts in Talipanan Beach, Puerto Galera- Mind you, these resorts are notorious for being "family-run" (read: there's a lot of room for improvement) so don't expect Shangri-la hospitality. But so far I haven't encountered condescending resort-owners, which is good, save for that Luca guy who owns the famous pizzeria at the far end of the beach, who obviously thought of me as an el cheapo local tourist. (Pizza was great, though.) Talipanan is a long way off from White Beach, where all the action is. I'll take Talipanan over White Beach anyday.

3. Whaleshark watching in Donsol, Sorsogon- The beach isn't much, heck, I didn't even see anyone taking a swim. Not much to do here except swim with them gentle giants, and I'm telling you, it's an experience that's nothing short of incredible. Make Donsol a sidetrip when you visit Mayon.
