ENCHANTED KINGDOM BIDS GOODBYE TO SUMMER

Flores de Mayo a Success Amidst Downpour

Overcast skies and heavy rains did not deter Enchanted Kingdom (EK), the country’s premier theme park, from staging its much-awaited annual event Flores de Mayo.

Originally scheduled to go around the Park, like the real troupers they were, the cast members of EK staged the parade at Eldar’s Tent instead. Eldar’s Tent is a sprawling 600sqm. air-conditioned venue perfect for corporate events and personal milestones. The new location did not discourage people from flocking to the place and witnessing a colourful and grand event right before their very eyes. The show must go on!

Accompanied with the band music of Los Baños Drum & Lyre, the beautiful sagalas along with their debonair escorts paraded in their colourful and glamorous gowns to pay homage to the Virgin Mary who took the center stage.

The Flores de Mayo featured the works of the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines headed by current President Johnny Abad and Junjun Cambe.

Aside from Mr. Cambe’s models, winners from the Slimmers World / Ms. Bikini Philippines 2009 Jocel Gimenez Kusain – 2nd Runner Up, Mariella Castillo – 1st Runner Up, Kimberly Brandon – Ms. International and Kim de Guzman – Ms. World together with Alexis Sy Go – Ms. Phils-Earth Runner Up 2009, Michelle Martha Braun – Ms. Phils-Earth Air 2009, Adie Adelantar – Ms. Phils.-Earth Eco Tourism 2009, Venus Raj – Ms. Phils-Earth Eco Tourism 2008 and Razel Eguia – Ms. Phils-Earth Air 2008 also sashayed around the tent in their full regalia.

Enchanted Kingdom’s VP for SMILE (Sales, Marketing, Imagineering, Leisure and Entertainment) Cynthia R. Mamon, Ph.D. was the hermana mayora of the event with Bea R. Mamon complementing the mother-daughter tandem.

Despite the gloomy skies, EK weathered the night with flourish, providing yet another magical moment for the park goers.

The evening was later capped off by “Enchanté Summer Musical”, a unique under the sea experience featuring EK’s cast members a.k.a. employees and a grand fireworks display to bid the last night of summer farewell.

Moriones Festival

The Moriones Festival is a yearly religious festival held in the province of Marinduque. During this festival, men and women wear colorful costumes, including masks, which replicate the clothes worn by Roman legionnaires during biblical times. Several towns in Marinduque serve as a giant stage for the festivities. The celebration starts on Holy Monday and concludes on Easter Sunday.

The first Moriones was held in the town of Mogpog in 1807. It was started by Fr. Dionisio Santiago, who was the town’s parish priest during that time.

The name of the festival was derived from the Spanish word morion, which means mask or visor. They reenact the story of Longinus, a Roman centurion with a blind eye. According to legend, Longinus pierced the side of Jesus Christ’s body while he was crucified on the cross. The blood that spurted out from the wound touched Longinus blind eye, and his sight was fully restored. Because of this miracle, Longinus converted to become a Christian. This made the other centurions angry. They chase Longinus all over the town. Once caught, he was made to kneel before Pontius Pilate and beheaded him.

The morions also roam the streets of all throughout the week, scaring the children, serenading the ladies or playing tricks to get attention. The unsuspecting victims do not recognize the “soldiers” because of their full costumes.

The towns in the province also hold pabasa, where the story of Christ’s passion is recited in verse. A reenactment of the suffering and crucifixion of Christ is one of the highlights of the festival. During the reenactment, men inflict pain on themselves by whipping their bare backs and carrying crosses. Some even allow themselves to be crucified.

White Christmas Fun at the Enchanted Kingdom

The extreme workaholic in me needed a break, so what better way to unwind than to go to a theme park and get in touch with my inner kid? So it was a couple of Saturdays ago that I dragged my harassed self to Enchanted Kingdom. I usually don’t make the effort to go all the way to places as far as Sta. Rosa, Laguna (from where I’m coming from, at least) but let me tell you, spending a day at the Enchanted Kingdom during Christmas season is definitely worth the commute.

First thing I noticed upon arriving at the park is the amount of people walking around the sprawling property. Man, it was crowded. Blame it on the holiday season; people are in a festive mood and they want to spend the entire day having fun. But the nice thing about the park is that the premises are still clean and orderly even with the mind-boggling amount of people inside it. I would like to commend the park’s maintenance staff for keeping the grounds free of trash and whatnots despite the steady rush of people going to and fro the place.

Aside from the rides, I was eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the park’s Christmas Village. After getting our adrenalin rush on the rides (my favorite was Anchors Away – I remember screaming my lungs out and checking my midsection if my stomach was still in its rightful place after being swayed left and right to almost vertical angles) we trooped to Brooklyn Place. Let me tell you, they recreated the 1930s New York vibe perfectly. Cobblestone streets, the Five n’ Dime Emporium, the Soda Fountain, and The Rialto made Brooklyn Place my most favorite area in the park (close second is the Jungle Outpost, where I had the most marvelous time shopping for tribal trinkets). The lines in The Rialto were SO long it was crazy, but I couldn’t blame the crowd for patiently taking their turn to go inside this motion stimulator theater. I would have braved the lines if I weren’t waiting for the Christmas event.

I wanted to see the Walking Belen that the park organized to kick off EK’s long list of exciting Christmas activities, so went to the bandstand to wait for the program. A few minutes later, the lovely Donita Rose, who is the celebrity narrator of the Christmas story, came onstage. After the dramatization, the troop proceeded to The Rialto to conclude the program. The choir was excellent; their heavenly voices served as the perfect backdrop for the festive atmosphere at Brooklyn Place.

The Christmas Village was finally unveiled around 8 PM. By this time, a crowd had already gathered at Brooklyn Place to wait for the artificial snow to fall off the rooftops. Christmas lights were all ablaze and the air smelled of hot chocolate and cinnamon; we were all excited! Susan Enriquez from GMA-7’s Kay Susan Tayo was there to cover the event, which added to the crowd’s anticipation even more. Soon enough, light flakes began falling from the top of the buildings of Brooklyn Place; we went crazy snapping pictures because everything was just so postcard pretty. EK concluded the event with a beautiful fireworks display, which made us take pictures even more.

We had so much fun that it was obvious that we plan to go back and take all that Enchanted Kingdom has to offer. For more information regarding the park’s operating schedule and upcoming events, you can log on to www.enchantedkingdom.com.ph or you can call (632) 830-2111 to 16 or (632) 843-6074 to 78.
