Understanding Forex Currency Trading

Forex is the shortened word derived from two words: Foreign Exchange. The Foreign Exchange is the exchange of one currency for another. Hence, Forex currency trading is the exchange of a foreign currency. The understood part is ‘in order to make significant profits.’

Forex currency trading wasn’t always as easy to get into as it is today.
Before the barriers were broken down and tossed aside in the Forex market, smaller investors who wanted to compete in Forex currency trading couldn’t.
It was the banker’s world and wannabe traders weren’t even allowed to play on the same playground by reason of lack of funds and lack of the tools needed to find success with Forex currency trading.
By now, when you surf the Internet and see the word Forex, you may also see the words currency pair along with it. Just know that the currency pairs are what Forex currency trading consists of. You are taking pairs of currency – and they are always in pairs, never singles – and you’re either buying those currencies or you’re selling them.
Some currency pairs are more popular than other currencies and you may see those referred to as the ‘majors.’ This is information that you will need to know a lot about when you want to be a part of Forex currency trading, so learn as much as you can about currency pairs.
Learn all the currency pairs, but concentrate mainly on the ones that trade most often and then when you’re ready to start in Forex currency trading, trade only those currencies you have become knowledgeable enough to trade.
Your main focus in Forex currency trading should be obtaining a currency that is going to go up above the other currency. It’s sort of like a horse race. When you’re at the track, you want to bet on the horse that you know the history on and feel is a winner. The same principle applies to Forex currency trading. You want the pair that’s going to come in a winner.
How do you know which currency is going to come in the winner? You go over your charts, you study trends until the images are imprinted on your eyelids when you fall asleep. A strong trend is what the banks knew and followed in the beginning when other smaller investors weren’t trading and the trend is what you need to follow as well in Forex currency trading.

Working for Call Centers: Benefits and Disadvantages

Call centers have established a whole new culture for the people working for these BPO companies. Hailed as the sunshine industry of the Philippines, call centers and the rest of the BPO industry have attracted thousands of Filipino employees. Call centers are considered as a savior of the economy; the unemployment rate has definitely lessened when call centers started to operate in the country.

The most obvious benefit of working for call centers is obvious: good money. Salaries for new graduates usually start at PHP15, 000. For those with previous experiences, the pay can go as high as PHP35, 000 – and that’s just for the average Joe who takes calls. Employees who hold supervisory or managerial positions earn a lot more. Aside from their basic salary, those who get assigned to the night shift get night differential pay. This is definitely a lot more than what other employees get from their day jobs.

Call center employment also means great benefits galore. On top of the high pay that they are receiving, employees get other benefits such as HMO coverage and allowances (for rice, transportation, clothing and sometimes even for gas).

Now the disadvantages. Working at night can be a bitch. It’s hard enough changing your body clock to deal with the graveyard schedule, but you also have to deal with the lack of social life or the opportunity to do errands during the day because you are already asleep by the time the sun is bright and shining. Plus, sustaining a night shift schedule can pose serious consequences to your health.

And yes, it can get tiring answering calls all the time. Call center employees often complain of “brain drain” because of the monotonous nature of their job.

This is why call centers constantly try to top the competition when it comes to employee benefits packages. They try to compensate for the obvious downsides. Employers will give bonuses to add to the hefty amount of money that an employee is already earning. They will also provide various means of recreation for employees. Most call center offices have billiard tables, computer game stations and sleeping lounges where employees can relax during their breaks. Management also organizes frequent team outings to give employees a chance to take a break from the monotony of their work.

Pros and cons aside, it is clear that call centers are here to stay in the Philippines. It will provide employment for those who are having difficulties getting jobs in other fields. Whether it will prove beneficial or detrimental to the culture of young Pinoy workers is yet to be seen.

Why Did Sex Scandals Become Popular?

Whether we like it or not, sex scandals have somehow become part of popular culture today. The never-ending interest of people in watching these videos have only intensified its presence even more. We have this secret (or not-so-secret) fascination with sex scandals, probably because it brings out the inner voyeur in all of us. We do feel sorry for these people whose reputations are destroyed because of indecent exposure, but this does not stop us from watching sex scandals at all, especially when we remember that some reputations were made because they “accidentally” released their sex videos (think Paris Hilton).

Other main reasons why sex scandals have become popular are the following:

  • Video technology is just too accessible today

Gone are the days when you need to have a bulky, expensive video camera in order to capture any videos. Today, just about anyone and his brother can shoot videos using their camera phones. It does not help that camera phones are getting better and better especially in terms of resolution. You can take pictures and videos anytime, anywhere.

  • People have become more adventurous when it comes to their sex lives

Years ago, only porn stars would allow themselves to be videotaped while doing sexual acts. Now there are lots of people, especially the younger ones, who are willing to exercise their exhibitionist tendencies. You only have to look at the pictures posted by these people in their social network accounts – they have no qualms about doing provocative poses while wearing teeny-tiny underwear, or nothing at all. Like it or not, exposing themselves to the public or few selected people can be a turn-on, and nothing beats a live sex act when it comes to exposure.

  • Some people are just too careless

A lot of sex scandals surfaced because someone forgot to delete compromising pictures and videos from his phone or computer before having it repaired in service centers. The thing is, you really can’t trust anyone. This is true especially when you are a celebrity leaving your mobile phone or laptop for repairs. The temptation to copy and spread your juicy pictures and videos is just too strong to resist, especially when you think that other people can actually profit from it.

  • Some people have no sense of discretion

It’s one thing to videotape yourself and your partner having sex but it’s another thing when you spread it for the whole damn world to see. There are people who like to watch and there are some who like to be watched. Unfortunately, there are some who would let other people see the videos without the knowledge of the other sex partner. What’s even worse is that they would actually share the videos by sending it via Bluetooth or MMS to other people’s phones. Like I said, you really can’t trust anyone.

Sex and the Call Center Culture

The latest batch of sex scandal videos that are spreading in public nowadays include those that allegedly involve employees working for call centers. These “call center scandals” have made people curious about the factors that may have made call centers as a “breeding ground” of hot sex scandals spreading on mobile phones and the Internet.

Of course, the jury is still out on whether this is really true or not, but still, people can’t help but wonder if the culture and working environment in call centers may have contributed to the brazenness of its employees to commit sexual acts inside office premises and record themselves doing the act, whether with or without the intention of spreading the videos to the public.

The social profile of the employees working for call centers is one of the biggest factors of the increasing incidence of sex in call centers. Majority of the employees are young, ranging from 20-30 years old. Most of them are single and a fair lot of them are fresh graduates. People in this age range are at the height of sexual exploration, and working with people with the same age and liberal attitude can lead to bold experimentations with their co-workers right in the office premises.

The financial capabilities of the call center employees are also seen as another major factor. The big salaries allow many of these workers to live away from their parents and do practically everything they want. This exhilarating feeling of freedom makes them adventurous enough to commit forbidden sex in the workplace.

The very schedule of majority of the employees is seen as a major factor to the occurrence of sex in call centers. All people have the tendency to do intimate activities during night time, and this includes call center workers who are on boring and stressful graveyard shifts.

The call center companies themselves are not admitting outright that the sex scandal issues are true, but they are already implementing policies to prevent employees from engaging in sexual activities inside the workplace. Stricter dress codes for women are required to make sure that none of them will wear revealing and indecent outfits when reporting for work. The temperature inside the offices is set couple of centigrade lower than usual to make employees wear jackets, therefore covering up exposed skin.

Hidden cameras and CCTVs are also installed around the premises, especially on the areas where employees were caught having sex. These areas include sleeping quarters, fire exits, parking lots and conference rooms.

Despite all these, people working for call centers stress that the public is blowing the whole thing out of proportions. Sex in the workplace, whether in call centers or not, is already happening even before the BPO industry became popular. The sudden popularity of the call center industry has put the spotlight on them, therefore creating controversies that may or may not be true.

TRAINING STORY OF THE DAY: CAN YOU WALK A BLIND CUSTOMER THROUGH YOUR PROCESS?

This is a true story of call center training that happened (March 2, 2009) while I was doing comm training (Day 7) for a group of technicians. To practice prepositions of position, we took a laptop from the lab and one of the technicians (unable to see me) walked me through removing the hinge cover, removing the keyboard, and removing and reseating the connector to the motherboard, and putting it all back together. You should know that this was the first time I had ever opened a laptop.

Next I chose a technician that, by his own admission the first day of training, said he had communication issues. I asked him to have me remove and reseat the hard drive. The catch was, I closed my eyes and did it as if I was blind. The technician could not see me either; the rest of the associates gathered around me (either to protect me from myself or the computer from damage I’m not sure which!).

Again, I had never done this before, eyes open OR shut. In perfect, calm, clear English, he guided me through locating the screws, finding the hard drive, removing and replacing it, replacing the screws and the battery. I had only 2 bits of help one of the trainees moved the loose screws a bit closer to me so that I could “find” them on the table without knocking them off, and I opened one eye as I replaced the first screw. Because the screwdriver was magnetized, I had a hard time getting the screw to stay in the hole, so I took a peak.

This associate did such a fantastic job that he got a heartfelt, warm round of applause. When we deconstructed the communication activity (i.e., What did you learn while listening to the associate and watching me?) they all resoundingly agreed that with correctly-paced instructions, careful enunciation and pronunciation and the right amount of patience, they could help a customer do ANYthing. This was not about technical skill (this technician is known to be good technically!) it was about the ability to transform words into a successful, warm customer experience.

Not only was it a rewarding experience for the technician (who clearly had progressed communication-wise) and his peers (who learned how to convey confidence and gain the trust of the customer), but for me, as well. As I was temporarily disabled, I learned, if only for 15 minutes, how important the senses of hearing and touch are and how great it is to get a technician who matches one’s competency and pace.

Rocky Peltzman wrote a few other related articles, one of which is a widely read piece regarding “Accent Reduction“.

How to Check Out a Hoax

The internet is a great way to breed and spread scams because it is so easy to send e-mail messages to hundreds of people with just a push of a button. Your inbox may contain a number of hoaxes that can be amusing and downright annoying at the same time. It's nice if you immediately identify it as a hoax, but what if you did not? Some of these hoaxes are so nicely done they can fool a lot of unsuspecting people.

To make yourself an expert in identifying hoaxes, check out some of the most common hoax scenarios that have invaded the internet.

– The one that promises to give a fantastic freebie
This is probably the most common hoax of all. Banners will suddenly pop out in your screen and asks you to click and answer a few questions. In return, they promise to give you a new laptop or mp3 player. They will ask for personal information such as your phone number and e-mail address. The shady individuals behind these will start flooding your inbox with ads and junk mail and will start calling your home and try to sell you stuff.

– The one that contains a hidden virus
An e-mail that gives you information about a popular news item or event asks you to click on a video or attachment which promises to make you see something awesome. Now if this e-mail did not come from a reputable source, chances are that video or attachment contains some intrusive adware and pretty nasty viruses that create havoc in your computer.

– The one that gives away spectacular coupons
Websites or pop-banners will offer you loads of coupons for free items. It can be a free meal or free software. You have to use your common sense for this one. If you think the offer is too good to be true, then it probably is a hoax.

Hurray, The Philippines Now Produces More Oil!

With oil prices flying as if it’s on jet fuel, the oil importing country Philippines finally has a real reason to rejoice. The government announced the country’s first oil extraction at the Galoc oilfield, which is approximately 60 kilometers northwest of the Palawan islands. The facility is expected to yield about 17,000 ~ 20,000 barrels of oil per day within the next three months.

world oil priceWith the dollar strapped Philippines importing approximately US$6 billion worth of oil per year, this new development is something that will be appreciated to the tune of $1.4 ~ 1.6 million/day, the value of crude oil that the country will not have to pay for in US$. The computation is based on today’s world oil price of $82.65/barrel.

Should there be spikes in crude oil prices, the amount of dollar that the economy need not generate can rise to $3 million per day. All in all, Galoc’s oil production can save the Central Bank between $1.4M ~ $3M/day or as much as $1.09 Billion/year.

At present, the country produces a little more than Galoc’s capacity.

P4-B microfinance started with P20, typewriter

MANILA, Philippines—A venture that was started with P20 and an old Remington typewriter is now a one-stop shop offering loans, banking services and life insurance. And, because of it, hundreds of thousands of poor clients have become richer.

For the past 20 years, the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD MRI) has been extending all forms of credit to landless peasants to help them rise out of poverty.

From its base in San Pablo City, Laguna, it has quietly reached out to the women of landless families, even in conflict areas in Mindanao, to help them set up small livelihood projects, save extra income, and get insured in case of death.
